Last Tuesday,  between fighting with Touré on Twitter and sending bizzarely inappropriate “best wishes” on 9/11, Donald “The Donald” Trump found time to squeeze in a press conference at Washington D.C’s Old Post Office to unveil his plans for the hotel he is going to build in the historic building. To my own surprise, I was invited.

Much of the Trump clan was in attendance, including daughter Ivanka (who actually does most of the running of the Trump hotels), sons Eric and Donald Jr., and the D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray.

As you’d imagine, the Donald’s briefing was heavy with superlatives, “It will be magnificent at the highest level;” quite a bit of bragging infused with a touch of self-promotion “What I do best is build! Better than the Apprentice, better than politics,” and threats, (to Ivanka) “You better do a good job or you’re fired!”  The best part was the unveiling of the hotel designs, which are pretty damn gorgeous. Over the top, yes, but it’s a Trump Hotel. You don’t check in looking for understated chic.

See my Hotel Chatter story for more, but here’s a peek at a guest room:

Say what you like about the man, (no, really, go ahead) you’ve got to admit he’s got a handle on the hotel business. Even though construction isn’t supposed to start until next year, he’s already getting to work on the windows because “they needed painting.” He’s sincere, too, about respecting the building’s heritage. And, good news to all of us who will probably never be able to afford a room, the top of the Old Post Office Tower will remain open to the public. Just as well, it’s free and you get one of the best views of D.C. from up there.
