Sunday Nostalgia: Ko Panyi 1998

Somewhere along my first trip through Thailand with friends from Tokyo, we chartered a sailing boat that took us through Phang Nga Bay and to the small Muslim fishing village of Ko Panyi, where we spent the night in a home hiked up on stilts, with electricity that ran intermittently through a generator.

I have the memory of several firsts: the claustrophobia of a mosquito net; the serenity of the morning call to prayer, a sound that (on the rare occasions I get to hear it) still sounds like a dream.
